We're back after, I really don't know after how many time, probably more than a month...

What happened was that the site was attacked (it was running Joomla 1.5.3).

I've (finally) solved the problem and updated to Joomla 1.5.7 so everything should be OK now.

Some people have sent me mails suggesting extensions for automatically updating Joomla, I'll definitely have a look at them and if they're good, I'll post them here. That way, those of you, like me, that got lazy because updating Joomla can take a lot of time, can have an alternative to uploading more than 1000 files to the server where your site is hosted!
